Orthodox Fasting Guidelines

Dietary Requirements

Strictly vegan diet during fasting periods. No meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, or eggs are permitted. Plant-based foods, grains, vegetables, and fruits are encouraged.

Timing and Meals

Traditionally, only one meal is consumed per day during fasting periods, typically taken in the afternoon after 3:00 PM. Water and non-caloric beverages are permitted throughout the day.

Spiritual Discipline

Fasting is accompanied by intensified prayer, scripture reading, and acts of charity. The faithful also abstain from gossip, anger, and other sinful behaviors, focusing on spiritual purification.

Exemptions

The fast is not obligatory for young children (under 7), the elderly with health concerns, the severely ill, pregnant women, and nursing mothers. Medical conditions may warrant pastoral guidance.
